Dogs do a lot for us. They keep us company, entertain us, clean up our messes and a lot more. They can also protect us. Look inside for video of German Shepherds and Dobberman Pinchers going out on patrol with Marines on Iwo Jima in 1945 during World War II.

During World War II dogs served variety tasks as first aid dogs, messenger dogs, scout dogs, guard dogs and sled dogs. One source claimed that “scout dogs used in reconnaissance work warned patrols of the presence of Japanese within ranges varying up to 1,000 yards.”
